Angel Hub is a pioneering angel investment network based in Monterrey, Mexico. It focuses on providing early-stage startups with access to capital, expertise, and mentorship, leveraging a network of high-net-worth individuals and experienced investors. Although it started in Monterrey the platform now has investors across Mexico, Colombia, and several countries in Latin America.

The venture emerged from the founders’ realization of a significant gap in the region’s venture capital ecosystem, a lack of funding and structured support for early-stage entrepreneurs.

There’s a lot of capital in LATAM, but much of it goes into real estate or traditional asset classes. We felt a need to channel some of that capital into startups, to drive innovation and economic growth in the region.

The Origins of AngelHub

Angel Hub’s roots trace back to an accelerator program called Startup Studio, one of the first in Monterrey and Mexico. The accelerator, founded by Mario Garcia Davila, supported 30 startups, helping them develop ideas and prepare for early funding rounds. However, sustaining the model proved challenging.

“The ecosystem wasn’t ready 10 years ago. There were a few funds, and angel investing was practically nonexistent. It was hard for startups to secure their first checks.” - Santiago Sada

When the accelerator model didn’t work out, the team pivoted toward forming an angel network, initially starting with just 12 to 20 angels.

The network officially launched in November 2019, initially hosting in-person events and pitches. However, COVID-19 forced them to adapt quickly to virtual formats, which unexpectedly helped streamline their operations.

COVID changed everything. Suddenly, investors who were skeptical about Zoom meetings had no choice. It ended up being the best thing for us because it normalized digital pitches and opened up opportunities.

Angel Hub’s Investment Thesis

Angel Hub focuses on sectors across LATAM that have potential, targeting startups with scalable business models and innovative solutions. The team emphasizes mentorship alongside capital investment, helping startups refine their business strategies and prepare for growth.

We’re not competing with traditional asset classes, but a small percentage of the region’s wealth needs to go into venture capital to foster innovation. It’s essential for long-term growth.

The network actively educates local investors on the value of venture investing, often starting with small, manageable investments.

“In Mexico, many traditional investors were unfamiliar with startups and venture capital. We had to explain concepts like pre-revenue valuations and the potential for high returns. It has required patience and a lot of education.” - José Luis Cimental

What's Next for Angel Hub?

Angel Hub’s leaders are laying the groundwork for a bigger fund while maintaining an active portfolio.

“We always have at least one active portfolio of 13 angels pooling around $300,000, with individual checks ranging from $25,000 to $50,000. This complements one-on-one angel investing.” - Santiago Sada

This streamlined approach ensures speed and alignment, with all presented startups receiving funding so far.

We’re also working with partners to operate their funds —currently managing three $3 million pre-seed funds and a larger $20 million fund. These funds appreciate our discovery process and access to top LATAM opportunities, which positions us to launch our fund in the near future.

Identifying Emerging Opportunities

Angel Hub identifies opportunities by addressing the challenges unique to LATAM´s startup ecosystem. These include a lack of early-stage funding, limited angel investor participation, and an underdeveloped innovation culture.

Santiago emphasized: "Ten years ago, there were barely any venture funds in Mexico. Founders faced huge challenges in securing early capital, and the angel scene was almost nonexistent. We knew we needed to step in."

Jose Luis Cimental added, "Our role became not just investing, but educating the community about venture capital. It wasn’t just about writing checks; it was about building trust with traditional investors who were unfamiliar with this asset class."

Looking Ahead

With over 200 angels in their network and 120 actively investing, Angel Hub is making an impact. Many newer angels require 3-4 months to understand the asset class, which is where Angel Hub’s academy comes into play. “We prioritize education, ensuring they feel comfortable and confident before making their first investments,” Santiago emphasized.

“LATAM is full of potential. With the right support, it can become a leading hub for startups in Latin America. We’re excited to be part of that transformation.” - Santiago Sada

Vision: The “AngelList” of LATAM

Angel Hub aims to become the “AngelList of LATAM.” This vision includes a digital platform to scale across the region and globally. Mario explained, “We’re focused on training and converting businessmen and businesswomen into angel investors, helping them lower transaction risks and make their first investments.”

Santiago summed up their mission: “It’s an ecosystem, and every part is essential. Angel investors are a cornerstone. LATAM faces challenges like financial inclusion, healthcare, and education. Venture Capital can empower nations, and we’re here for that journey.”
