Julian Roeoes, Partner at Picus Capital

Picus Capital has invested in over 170 companies worldwide, spanning fintech, energy, climate, enterprise infrastructure, generative AI, cybersecurity, and healthcare.

The firm takes a patient, research-driven approach to investing, ensuring alignment with founders who are building category-defining companies. This strategy has enabled Picus to expand into key emerging markets, including Latin America.

The Origin of Picus Capital

Picus Capital was founded by Robin Godenrath with the vision of supporting technology-driven entrepreneurship on a global scale. "Robin and I have known each other for many years, and when he started Picus, we frequently discussed the firm's long-term mission," Julian told VC Mexico.

The firm was born out of a belief that many of the world's biggest problems can be addressed by innovative startups, and that capital should be patient and value-driven rather than purely transactional. The firm initially focused on European markets before expanding internationally.

We back early-stage startups in high-growth sectors like fintech, climate, and enterprise software, addressing industry inefficiencies. Our hands-on approach ensures deep involvement with founders from the start.

Picus Capital’s Investment Thesis

Picus Capital takes a sector-agnostic but structured approach to investing, focusing on high-growth opportunities with strong economic fundamentals.

We look for exceptional teams building in large, addressable markets where technology plays a fundamental role in driving efficiency and scaling businesses.

Julian Roeoes

Picus invests in fintech, AI, climate, and enterprise infrastructure. They evaluate companies based on three key pillars:

  • Quality of the founding team

  • Size of the total addressable market

  • Ability to generate high-margin revenue through technological differentiation

We assess thousands of companies every year, narrowing down to a select few where we see the highest potential. Our role extends beyond capital deployment; we actively work alongside founders, leveraging our global network and operational expertise to accelerate their growth.

Despite its broad investment scope, Picus maintains a disciplined approach to decision-making. While diversification across industries and geographies presents challenges, it also enables the firm to cross-pollinate ideas and strategies from one market to another.

Picus has built a global team that stays closely connected to the ecosystems it invests in, allowing the firm to identify trends and opportunities before they become mainstream.

Our primary goal is to identify companies where software and innovation create a distinct competitive advantage, allowing for sustainable growth and strong unit economics.

Emerging Opportunities

Picus Capital leverages its global reach and research-driven approach to identify opportunities before they become mainstream.

Our ability to recognize market trends early is one of our strongest advantages. We focus on sectors where technology is driving fundamental change, allowing us to back companies that are ahead of the curve.

Julian Roeoes

By combining deep market insights with a hands-on approach, Picus positions itself as more than just an investor—it acts as a strategic partner to founders, helping them navigate growth challenges and capitalize on key opportunities.

We don’t just invest in businesses; we actively work to strengthen them. This requires us to continuously refine our investment thesis and remain adaptable to changing market conditions.

The Importance of In Person Engagement

Personal relationships play a crucial role in venture capital. In-person meetings can make a significant difference, as relying too much on remote interactions has led to missed opportunities.

In-person meetings make a real difference. There were deals we missed out on because we relied too much on remote interactions. Flying out to meet founders, attending board meetings, and building relationships face-to-face can be the difference between winning or losing a competitive deal.

Julian Roeoes

This hands-on approach extends beyond initial investments, as founders value investors who are actively engaged and willing to understand their challenges firsthand.

Picus Capital’s Perspective on Building Long-Term Value

Beyond short-term gains, Picus Capital prioritizes long-term value creation for both founders and investors.

We think about investments in terms of decades, not years. This mindset allows us to support companies through different market cycles, ensuring they have the resources and guidance needed to succeed.

Julian Roeoes

This long-term perspective shapes how Picus engages with its portfolio companies, offering ongoing support beyond the initial funding stages.

The firm takes an active role in helping businesses develop sustainable growth strategies, leveraging its network and expertise to drive long-term success. Rather than focusing solely on the next funding round, Picus prioritizes building companies that can thrive for years to come.

Why Curiosity, Hustle, & Empathy still win in Venture

Everybody can do it if you are excited to work with founders and challenge the status quo. Just be intellectually curious, diligent, and build your own brand.

Julian Roeoes

Julian came into venture from investment banking, uncertain how he’d break into a competitive, relationship-driven industry. But what he quickly learned is that founders care more about value than pedigree. By showing up, asking smart questions, giving feedback even when not investing and doing the hard work of researching companies directly (speaking with customers, experts, and digging into the market), he was able to source high-quality deals, including in regions he barely knew.

Today, some of Picus’ strongest early-stage investments in Latin America came from that combination of effort, curiosity, and founder-first energy.

Spend time with people, be helpful, and don’t just chase signals from other funds. That’s how you earn your place.
